Nestled in the heart of downtown Des Moines, the Court District is the entertainment destination of Iowa’s capital city with an adventure to offer everyone. Dating back to 1846, the Court District is one of Des Moines’ oldest downtown
neighborhoods and the site of many Des Moines firsts - the first two-story house, public school, post office, bank and bridge across the Des Moines River at Court Avenue. Today, historic office buildings and shops have been reinvented into stylish restaurants and nightclubs as well as tucked-away ‘feels like home’ pubs and coffee shops. An assortment of residential lofts and apartments perched above and throughout the Court District encompass the live, work and play feel of the thriving Des Moines downtown scene.
Anchored at the west end by the stalwart Polk County Court House, the Court District extends east to the river bridge. Period street lamps, planters and park benches dot the sidewalks, making it an attractive and pedestrian-friendly setting. The sounds of Jazz, Hip-hop and Indie rock music spill onto the streets, as do tantalizing scents from the diverse selection of restaurants throughout the District.
From baseball to Broadway, the Court District is also the heart of Des Moines’ downtown activity base. The Court District proudly hosts the Downtown Farmers' Market, one of the country's largest outdoor markets enticing throngs of weekend shoppers, street entertainers and musicians every weekend from May through October. The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines serves as an outstanding performing arts center that entertains and enlightens. Principal Park, one of the nation’s most breathtaking minor league ballparks and home to the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) offers major league fun, and the new $62 million Science Center of Iowa and Blank IMAX Dome Theater engages and inspires visitors of all ages.
